Living Without Cable

Ok, I'm in!

After years of paying hard-earned cash to the cable company, I've decided to cut the ties. I'm moving on...without cable.

And I don't just mean cable. I mean ANY pay television.

This is big.

For most of my life, I've had a pretty box above my television, a glittering friend who brought news, action, drama or anything else I wanted any time I wanted it. I can remember when I first learned we were getting cable, how I didn't really understand what it was about. But boy did I learn: MTV, CNN, and clear local stations were piped into our home. But as time moved along, I became dependent upon it. 'Why read,' I thought to myself, 'when TV can sum it up for you? That makes you more efficient, able to do more during the day.'

Man, did I fall for it. But not anymore. I'm done. The numbers simply no longer add up.

My $60/month relationship works out like this:
- Cable television: $40/month
- DVR box: $10/month (breaks down at least once per month, resulting in lost programming)
- TAX TAX TAX: need I say more?

Sorry, my dear - our relationship is no longer equally satisfying.

But, what does this mean? Am I stopping all visual entertainment? HELL NO! Make no mistake, I love all my TV shows, and the news, and the sports, and the (fill in any other item you wish). So what's the answer? How do I intend to get entertainment when I'm unplugging the one thing that I've come to depend upon FOR my entertainment?

Over the next months, I'll try to answer this, and in the process encourage you to do the same. The answer lies along many paths, in ways great and small. For now, think about the numbers I shared above: $60/month x 12 months= $720!!! Who would think this is not a good enough reason by itself to make the change?

It's time to try something radical, to shake up the very foundation of my digital life. I'm not unplugging, as much as I'm plugging in to something else. Rejoice, brother! Comcast and the rest are in real trouble!

Stay tuned!!
